Captain of the ACIT girls’ basketball team, Grace Speer, became the third player to score 1,000 career points. On Monday, January 24, the Lady Red Hawks hosted Delsea. While ACIT lost the game 38-46, Speer put up a stellar 28 points to achieve (and surpass) that coveted count so many basketball players dream of reaching.
The 1,000 point ceremony was held during the next home game on January 26. ACIT principal, Mr. Potkay, and athletic director, Dr. Wagner, attended the ceremony along with Speer’s close friends and family.
Coach Jaclyn Siscone expressed her happiness for Speer, who is her first player she coached that reached 1,000 points.
“It is just a testament to her love of the game and her work ethic that she was able to achieve this tremendous milestone even with the abbreviated season last year due to Covid,” said Siscone.
Although Speer was happy to pass the mark, she had mixed feelings after the game at Delsea. “… none of my friends went since I thought I would get it the next game,” said Speer.
Speer tried to anticipate when her 1,000-point game would be, but she ended up scoring a lot more points than she thought she would against Delsea. Speer may have underestimated her potential point count with Delsea; but, she has never underestimated the effort it would take for her to reach another goal: playing college basketball.
Speer starts the next chapter of her basketball career at Florida Institute of Technology this upcoming fall. While she prepares for the next level, she continues to stay focused on ACIT and leading the team in her final year as a Lady Red Hawk.
“She has been a pleasure to coach,” said Siscone, “and she certainly will leave her mark on the girls basketball team here at ACIT.”
